The Spices.

One of the most sought-after spices grown in Zanzibar is Vanilla. Vanilla is a popular flavour, famed for it's use in Ice cream. The warm and humid climate provides the ideal conditions for growing high-quality Vanilla beans - very similar to those seen in Madagascar. The Vanilla beans must be hand-pollinated which is a skilled and labour intensive process - part of the reason that Vanilla is the second most expensive spice in the world! They are then harvested, dried, and cured to produce its unique flavour and aroma. The Vanilla from Zanzibar is highly sought after by gourmet chefs and bakers worldwide for its rich, sweet, and creamy flavour.

Cardamom

Cardamom is another spice that is grown in the fertile soils of Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania. Cardamom is a fragrant spice with a unique flavour and is used in both sweet and savoury dishes in the local cuisine.

The spice is obtained from the seed pods of the cardamom plant, which grows in tropical regions. Cardamom cultivation is an important source of income for small-scale farmers in Tanzania and Zanzibar and contributes to the country's economy. The spice is also used in traditional medicine to treat various ailments, adding to its cultural and historical significance in the region.

One problem often encountered by the farmers is that the local Monkeys love the taste of cardamom so they often try to take some for themselves!

In Zanzibar, nutmeg is known for its sweet, warm, and slightly bitter flavor and is used in a variety of local dishes, including soups, stews, and curries. The spice is traditionally grown in the lush, tropical forests that cover much of the island, and is harvested by hand in a careful and labour-intensive process.

A local legend is that Zanzibar nutmeg can have special aphrodisiac properties, making it a sought-after ingredient! Despite limited scientific evidence to support these claims, nutmeg is often used in love potions and is believed to have the power to enhance libido and increase sexual desire.. Nutmeg remains a popular and valued ingredient in Zanzibar!

Cinnamon

Cinnamon is derived from the inner bark of the cinnamon tree and is widely used in both sweet and savory dishes for its warm, sweet flavor. The warm and humid climate in Zanzibar is ideal for growing cinnamon and the island has become one of the major producers of the spice in the world. In addition to its culinary uses, cinnamon is also used in traditional medicine and is valued for its health benefits.
